Our school council provides a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions which impact upon them. It is an important and useful way to provide leadership and development opportunities for our pupils.
The school council representatives have been voted in by their peers to represent their class. They attend School Council meetings and take forward the views of their class. Two of our council members are also part of the Cluster Council who visit The Ferrers Secondary School termly to meet with student councillors from other schools in the Higham and Rushden area and they lead on a project decided by the cluster. The theme this year is ‘Online Safety’. During our first meeting, our representatives, Jaycee and Olivia F were tasked with creating a plan to promote awareness of online safety for our school community. This was an unexpected task and whilst they had little time to think of something they used fantastic communication skills and teamwork to develop a plan.
We talked about creating leaflets and posters or maybe creating a questionnaire with advice based on responses. After a discussion, the girls decided that they would like to take it one step further and create a new section on our school website which they hope will be informative and fun to access.
They have since shared their ideas with the rest of the council members, who fully supported their aim. All members have since devised a questionnaire and gathered the necessary data to begin the project’s aim of increasing awareness regarding online safety.
Watch this space for more updates on their progress!
